Effects of Compulsive Gambling on Family Members
Gamblers keep their passion for action a secret. The most obvious effect of this disease is to the outside observer. Repossession of property, nuisance creditor calls, growing indebtedness and the shortage of money for everyday necessities such as food and rent are commonly experienced eventually by the family. Loved ones may not be aware of the reason for the shortage and are almost never aware of the full extent of the gambler's debt. Preoccupation with gambling and debt problems causes emotional withdrawal and the gambler becomes "unavailable."
Often the gambler will do some of the following:
- Having the mail sent to their office
- Lying about how they spend their time and money
- Controlling all family finances
- Forging loved ones' signatures to personal loans or second mortgages
Family members who come to recognize the compulsive gamblers' need for help may often not realize that they, too, need help. Chronic stress causes physical illness. Feelings of fear, anger and hopelessness allow the family to withdraw from other family members and friends. There is help for you. If your loved one will not recognize their illness it is important for you to share your situation, receive support, compassion and affirmations from others who have been there. There are ways to protect the remaining assets and your credit. Call for help.
